# How to manage a leave of absence or suspension without pay

When an employee takes a leave of absence, is suspended without pay, or has another long-term absence during which they should not accrue vacation, we recommend temporarily ending their contract in haddock HR.

### End the current contract

1. Go to the **Employees** menu.
2. Select the relevant employee.
3. Open the **Contracts** tab.
4. Find the active contract.
5. Change its end date to the last day on which the contract is active before the leave or suspension begins.

### Create the new contract for the employee's return

If you already know the return date, you can configure it now.

1. On the **Contracts** tab, click the **+** button.
2. Select the appropriate contract.

  - If the contract does not exist yet, you can create it first under **Settings > Contracts**.
3. Set the employee's return date as the start date.
4. Save the changes.

### What effect does this configuration have?

By temporarily ending the contract:

- The employee will not have an active contract during the leave or suspension period.
- They will not accrue vacation or other entitlements linked to time worked during that period.
- On the return date, the new contract will activate automatically and vacation accrual will resume as normal.

This process accurately reflects periods of inactivity and ensures that vacation calculations remain correct.
