**Waste** lets you record inventory losses due to **theft, breakage, personal consumption, or expiration** directly from haddock.

Recording these losses helps you:

* Keep a history of what gets lost in your day-to-day operations.
* Better understand the differences between your actual and theoretical stock.
* Reflect those quantities in **Theoretical Inventory** and the **CoGs** calculation.

---

# What is inventory waste?

Waste is any product or dish that you will no longer be able to sell or use as planned.

For example:

* A product that has expired.
* A broken bottle.
* An ingredient consumed by staff.
* Theft or an unrecoverable loss.

When you record waste, haddock deducts that amount from theoretical inventory from the selected date onward. In CoGs, waste helps explain part of what left the storeroom.

---

# Where can I find the Waste tab?

Inside the **Inventories** module, you will find a specific tab called **Waste**.

From there, you can:

* Record a **New waste entry**.
* Search previous waste entries.
* Filter the history.
* Edit or delete existing records.

💡 You need edit permissions for Inventories to create, edit, or delete waste entries.

---

# How do I record a new waste entry?

1. Go to **Inventories** > **Waste**.

2. Click **New waste**.

3. Choose the **Item type** you want to record:

* **Product**
* **Dish**

4. Search for and select the corresponding item.

💡 You can search by product or dish name.

5. Select the **Waste date**.

‼️ You can only select today or an earlier date.

6. Select the **Reason**:

* **Theft**
* **Breakage**
* **Personal consumption**
* **Expiration**

7. Enter the **Quantity**.

💡 The unit of measure is filled in automatically based on the selected item.

💡 If the item is measured in units or portions, enter a whole number. For kg, L, or other continuous units, you can use decimals.

8. Add **Notes** if you want to provide more context.

9. Click **Confirm** to save the waste entry.

Once created, the entry will appear in the list grouped by its **waste date**.

---

# What happens if you record waste for a dish?

When you record waste for a **dish**, haddock saves the lost dish and calculates the **affected ingredients** when it has a configured recipe costing.

The breakdown shows how much of each ingredient belongs to the waste entry. Those quantities:

* Are deducted from each product's **Theoretical Inventory**.
* Appear as **Waste** in CoGs for the corresponding period.
* Help explain the difference between POS sales and product consumption.

💡 If the ingredient breakdown does not appear, check that the dish has a recipe costing configured correctly in haddock.

---

# How do I filter my waste?

The **Waste** tab includes a search field and filters to make the history easier to review.

You can:

* Search by **product** or **dish** name.
* Filter by **date range**.
* Filter by **Item type**.
* Filter by one or more **Reasons**.

For example, you can review only waste caused by **expiration** during a specific week or separate **product** losses from **dish** losses.

---

# How do I edit or delete a waste entry?

Each waste entry includes an action menu where you can select **Edit** or **Delete**.

### Edit a waste entry

When you edit a waste entry, you can change:

* The **Waste date**.
* The **Reason**.
* The **Quantity**.
* The **Notes**.

‼️ The selected product or dish cannot be changed after the entry is created. If you chose the wrong item, delete the entry and create a new one.

The edited date must also be today or earlier. When you save the change, haddock recalculates its effect on Theoretical Inventory and CoGs using the new date.

### Delete a waste entry

If a waste entry was recorded by mistake, you can delete it from the same menu.

After deletion, it will no longer appear in the list or be included in Theoretical Inventory and CoGs.

# ❓ Frequently asked questions about waste

**Q: Can I record waste for products and dishes?**
**A:** Yes. When creating a waste entry, you can choose the **Item type** and record either a product or a dish.

**Q: Does waste affect Theoretical Inventory?**
**A:** Yes. It is deducted from theoretical stock from the waste date onward and appears in the **Waste** column.

**Q: How does waste affect CoGs?**
**A:** Waste is added to POS sales to explain consumption: **POS sales + Waste − Consumed = Variance**. It is not subtracted from Consumed because the inventory count already reflects what was lost.

**Q: Can I set a future date on a waste entry?**
**A:** No. The waste date can only be today or an earlier date, both when creating and editing an entry.

**Q: Can I change the date after creating a waste entry?**
**A:** Yes. Open the action menu, select **Edit**, change the date, and confirm.

**Q: Can I change the product or dish after creating a waste entry?**
**A:** No. If you selected the wrong item, delete the entry and create a new one.

**Q: What happens if I do not see affected ingredients for dish waste?**
**A:** The breakdown appears when the dish has a recipe costing configured in haddock.
